Freiburg and its region offer many opportunities especially to nature and sports fans. Probably the most popular activity is hiking in the Black Forest, which surrounds the city of Freiburg with its huge hills and trees. It's always worth a trip to destinations like the Kybfelsen or the nearest mountain around, Schauinsland. The highest mountain (which is also good for skiing) is the Feldberg. It's easy to reach the start points for hikes with the Höllentalbahn, a train that goes right through the Black Forest passing Titisee, Schluchsee and many more worth visiting places. The lakes are always worth stopping at and having a slice of cake ;) The Höllentalbahn is considered as one of the most beautiful train rides in Germany. Many people also enjoy riding their (mountain)bikes in the region.
If it's too cold or you're not up for hiking, you can do indoor sports, for example at university. They offer maaaany different sports, but you need to sign up for most of the courses early in the semester. This is the currently running programme of UniSport. For cloudy Sunday afternoons, you can always check the Eugen Keidel Mineralbad, a thermical bath easily reachable by public transport. If it's for a relaxing time with your Erasmus friends or your loved one, it's not wrong to relax in a hot whirlpool! Other places to swim are the Flückiger See located right next to StuSie, and on the other side of the lake you find the Westbad for more serious sports swimmers. If you're up for a short trip by bike, you can easily reach Tunisee, Opfinger See or Dietenbachsee.
But in case you have exams or just need a quiet place to study during your stay, you can take a seat in the UB (UniBib). It's opened 24/7 and a central meeting point for many students and you will never feel like you're the only one who has to study....
